lettering for NYC’s USRA design 9’-0” IH double-sheathed boxcars NYC, T&OC, CCC&StL

In December 1918 the NYC received 500 double-sheathed boxcars of the USRA approved design from American Car & Foundry under Lot 8572. These were assigned as Series 161000-161499 and designated as NYC Lot 394-B. In 1937 cars were renumbered into Series 278000-278999.
 
In January 1919, the NYC received an additional 500 cars from AC&F under Lot 8571 and assigned as Series 161500-161999, and designated as NYC Lot 404-B.
In 1937 cars were renumbered into Series 278000-278999.
 
In February 1919, 1,000 cars under AC&F Lot 8589 and 8572, were delivered to NYC’s subsidiary CCC&StL and assigned series CCC&StL 56000-56999. In 1937
the cars were renumbered into Series 290000-290999, with NYC Lots divided into 3 groups: 382-B, 395-B and 402-B.
 
Also in February 1919, NYC’s subsidiary T&OC (Toledo & Ohio Central) received 250 cars under AC&F Lot 8752. Assigned Series 14000-14249. In 1926-29, these were absorbed into the NYC system and renumbered into NYC Series 234700-234945 and designated as NYC Lot 386-B.
 
Paint & Lettering: Cars painted with NYC red-brown: TCP-221. Underbody and truck side frames coated with black car cement. Wheels and axles left unpainted
and allowed to rust and gather road grime. Lettering all white stencil paste.
 
Note: From 1918 to March 1945, cars were stenciled with the black backgound in the NYC oval. Beginning in March 1944 and through August 1955, the NYC
oval had a clear background. When the Gothic scheme was adopted in 1955, the NYC went back to having black backgounds in the oval. This decal sheet
contains both oval medallions.
