Lettering for 1944 AAR design 10'-0" IH boxcars - 1956 Lettering scheme

The D&H received 25 cars from AC&F with 4/4 IDN ends. An additional 250 1944 AAR design boxcars with the 3/4 IDN ends from D&H’s Oneonta, New York shops, delivered as follows:

Series 17775-17799, 25 cars, AC&F Lot 2962, delivered September 1946 (10’-4” IH, w/4/4 IDN ends)
Series 17800-17899, 100 cars, D&H Oneonta, delivered February 1948 (10’-0” IH, w/3/4IDN ends)
Series 17900-18049, 150 cars, D&H Oneonta, delivered 1948 (10’-0” IH, w/3/4IDN ends)

Paint & Lettering: By 1957 cars were painted and lettered as depicted on 17881 above with a new 60” medallion on the left side over the reporting marks, and a banner sized ‘DELAWARE & HUDSON” on the right. Car sides, ends and roof were painted boxcar red: TCP-923; underframe and trucks painted with black car cement. Wheels left unpainted and allowed to gather dust, rust and road grime. Lettering white
stencil paste.

It’s interesting that some cars produced during the same time period by Pullman had the lettering and medallion arrangement reversed. (see decal sheet D&H-5)
