lettering set for GN’s tongue & groove boxcars - 1950’s Empire Builder scheme

The Great Northern received 8,000 1937 AAR design 10’-0” IH boxcars with 3-1/4” tongue-and-groove siding, primarily to complement the local timber

industry, which accounted for 86% of GN’s freight revenue. Delivery and builder schedule is as follows:

Paint & Lettering: Car sides, ends, roof and truck sideframes were painted GN’s Mineral Brown. Underframes coated with black car cement. Lettering was white stencil paste and the GREAT NOTHERN RAILWAY with the 72”side facing goat.
