lettering set for GN’s1937 Tongue & Groove boxcars - 1948 repaint scheme

The Great Northern received 8,000 1937 AAR design 10’-0” IH boxcars with 3-1/4” tongue-and-groove siding, primarily to complement the local timber
industry, which accounted for 86% of GN’s freight revenue. Delivery and builder schedule is as follows:

Brass model by Protocraft: PC-3503 - due early 2015
 
Paint & Lettering: Car sides, ends and truck sideframes were painted GN’s Mineral Brown. Roof, underframes and running boards were black car cement. Lettering was white stencil paste and the SEE AMERICA FIRST with the 72” front facing goat. In 1940 cars came with either the black and white front facing goat or the side facing goat. (see decal set GN-5)
 
Beginning in June, 1948, the GN began repainting boxcars with GM Mineral Red - sides, ends, roof, underbody and trucks. Lettering was white stencile past
and the new side-facing goat with large GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY, white on black center. Doors were changed out with Youngstown steel doors for the
plywood cars, Series 44025-44999.
