The Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad received 1,002 all steel boxcars of the new 1937 AAR design with an inside height of 10’-0”. They were built by AC&F, Pullman and Ralston Car Company. Each incorporated various patented components. Protocraft obtained sets of original drawings from the Pullman Library for Pullman’s Lot 5649 and built this model to these plans. The W&LE assigned these cars road numbers as Series 24200-24501. This Lot embodies some very interesting components: the Pullman patented flat panel riveted roof, and the very unusual Pullman patented ribbed ends that rolled around the corners. All models come with brass Betterndorf trucks running on ball bearings and sintered steel rib back wheels with working journal box covers. Decals are Protocraft Decals W&LE-3
In 1949, the Nickel Plate Road leased the W&LE taking these cars with them. The NKP retained the road numbers and relettered the cars with NKP reporting marks and script. See Protocraft Decals set NKP-3d.
