lettering for Illinois Central’s 40’ wood refrigerator cars - original scheme

In 1917, the I.C. took delivery of 500, 40’ wood refrigerator cars from Haskell & Barker’s Michigan City plant, under Lot 5147. Series was 59001-59500. In January of 1918, another order of 500 cars were received from Haskell & Barker under Lot 5164 and assigned road numbers as Series 59501-60000. Between 1935 and 1938, the 583 remaining wood refrigerator cars were all placed into a group numbered 52000-52666, as seen above. (in 1937 a new fleet of all steel refrigerator cars began replacing the older wooden cars - see IC Reefer-2 decal sets)

Paint & Lettering: Car sides painted chrome yellow . Ends, roof and facia painted maroon. Underframe and brake equipment coated with black car cement. Lettering all black stencil paste.
