Paint & Lettering: Cars painted with DuPont 374-8004 Brown: TCP-221. Underframe and brake apparatus coated with F-1 black car cement. Lettering all white stencil paste. Between March 1944 and through August 1955, the NYC oval had a clear background. When the Gothic scheme was adopted in 1955, the NYC went back to having black backgounds in the oval. Note: Prior to February 20, 1941, all hoppers, flat cars and gondolas were painted black; from February 20, 1941 to June 6, 1956 they were painted DuPont Brown. After June 6, 1956, shops equipped for handling F-1 black car cement painted open cars black. Shops NOT equipped for handling F-1 cement painted open cars DuPont Brown (Speci.cation P-18) From 1960-1968, black paint replaced F-1 car cement and all shops painted open cars black. Some P&LE gondolas and flatcars were painted Century Green between 1960 and 1966.
