lettering for Santa Fe’s Fe-24 1959 8’ Cross: gold on green: Express service

Part Number: ATSF Fe-24ee 8’ Express

Price: $8.50

Built in December 1941, Pullman-Standard Car Company delivered 500 fifty-foot double-door cars to the Santa Fe under Lot number 5676. Initially given road numbers as Series 10000-10499. The rst 300 cars were selected for high-speed passenger express service and fitted with steam lines and Allied Full-Cushion high speed trucks, painted passenger green with DULUX synthetic gold stencilling and map/slogan scheme. In 1943 cars were renumbered into the 4100-4399 Series. The new 8 foot diameter cross scheme was introduced system-wide in 1959. The 8’ cross and the newly designed Ship and Travel were applied on both sides. Allied Cushion trucks were replaced with 50-ton ASF A-3 Ride-Control trucks. It was common to see these distinctive cars at the head-end position in almost all name trains across the country well into the 1950’s.

Paint & Lettering: Car bodies were painted ATSF passenger car green: TCP-255. Underbodies and truck sideframes coated with black car cement. Black anti-slip
compound with sand was applied to the steel roofs. The 1959 huge 8’ cross and circle herald was in Santa Fe’s standard DULUX synthetic gold.
