lettering for ERIE’s 10’-0” IH 50’ automobile/furniture cars w/end doors

In October 1928, the ERIE received it’s first all-steel 50‘ autocars with an order of 100 cars from the Magor Car Corporation’s Clifton plant under Lot P6684. These were assigned road numbers as Series 68000-68099. In October of 1930, the ERIE received an addtional 100 autocars of the same plan from Pressed Steel Car Company’s McKees Rocks plant under PSC Lot 7, and assigned road numbers as Series 68100-68199. Inside height of both series was 10’-0”. AAR Class designation was XAF. Cars were equipped with Ajax vertical staff hand brake and wood running boards. End doors were built by Standard Railroad Equipment Corp of Chicago, as were the 3/3/3 Dreadnaught Square corner ends. Roof was a Chicago-Cleveland Climax Radial design.

Paint & Lettering: Car sides painted freight car brown: TCP #215. Ends, roof, doors, door tracks, truck sideframes and underframe coated with black car cement. As-delivered, cars received the black and white 34” monogram positioned at 2” below the roof line. On January 14, 1944, the ERIE introduced the yellow and black 34” monogram, positioned 8” lower (10“ total), with Automobile and Furniture lowered 8” also. In mid-1946, this was painted over with the new 6’ tall black and white monogram positioned 6” below the roof line. “Automobile” and “Furniture” were no longer used, and data was spread horizontally.
