From July 1937 through July 1942, the Nickel Plate received 199, 50’-6” all-steel autocars built by the Ralston Steel Car Company as Series 87000-87199. Twenty Five cars, 87000-87024 were equipped with end doors, 3-panel Creco doors and a Viking roof Series 87000-87024, 25 cars, Ralston Steel Car Company, delivered June 1937 - 3-panel Creco doors - Viking Roof - end doors Paint & Lettering: As delivered, the cars were painted freight car brown : TCP-248. Ends, underbody and truck side frames were coated with black car cement; doors painted black; wheels unpainted. Lettering was all white stencil paste. Reporting Marks and Road numbers were all 9” high. This lettering set is for the as-delivered scheme with the curved leg in the R. After 1945, when repainted, the lettering intials NYC&StL were dropped above the reporting marks; and in 1946 the longer legged R was applied .
