The Louisiana & Arkansas Railroad, incorporated in 1898, operated on 332 miles of track between Arkansas and Shreveport, Louisiana, New Orleans and Dallas, Texas. In 1902, it was reorganized as the Louisiana & Arkansas Railway, now with 608 miles of trackage. In 1939, the L&A merged with the KCS, total trackage increased to 810 miles, and was best known for it’s premier passenger train the Shreveporter and later, the Hustler.

In July of 1930, the L&A took delivery of 300, 40-ton boxcars of the Howe Truss design. Built by General American Car Company, the cars were assigned road numbers as Series 12000-12299. The cars came with 2-section reverse 4/4 Dreadnaught ends, Hutchins radial roofs, and 6’ Creco doors. 35 were still in revenue service in 1958, but by 1965, all were gone except for some relegated to maintenance of way.
