Previous Return to list of all Decal Line in 1:87 Scale Next lettering for 8,000 gallon insulated tank cars
The KPCX 1550-1583 series were purchased second-hand in the mid-1930s, and there's no way to know who Koppers acquired them from or whether they were insulated when purchased or the insulation was added by Koppers. At any rate, there were 34 of them, all 8,000 gal. TMI class insulated cars originally built in 1917 by the Standard Tank Car Co. of Sharon, PA and the series continued unchanged through the late '30s, World War II, and on into the 1950s. By 1955, one car (1564) had the insulation and outer sheathing removed but the other 33 cars were still shown as insulated cars of class TMI. Their number was somewhat diminished by 1958, when only 30 cars (including 1564) remained in service, and all were gone by 1962. Like other Koppers insulated tank cars, they were used to ship coal tar chemicals. Richard Hendrickson
